Nortel Networks Phone Manual: How to Reset Voicemail Passwords on the Nortel T7316 Phone
It is common knowledge that default usernames and passwords, for whatever device, should be changed as soon as possible to prevent any unauthorized access. Your business phone systems are no exception. You may even want to change or reset your passwords on a regular basis.
We can show you how to reset your voicemail passwords on the Nortel T7316 phone. Before we begin, please note the following default passwords:
Two digit extension phone systems: 120000.
Three digit extension phone systems: 1020000.
Four digit extension phone systems: 10020000.
To reset the administrator password, press FEATURE 985. The voicemail extension will appear on your display screen. Next, press 9 and when prompted for a password, dial 7 3 7 3 8 7 6 7 7 9 3. When the system asks if you want to reset the password, press the YES softkey. The system will then release and restore the default password. You will then be able to change the default password to a new one.
To reset the user mailbox password as an administrator, press FEATURE 983. When the display reads “LOG” enter the administrator password. For example, if the password is 1234, on a two digit extension phone system, you would enter 1 2 1 2 3 4, on a three digit extension phone system, you would enter 1 0 2 1 2 3 4, or on a four digit extension phone system, you would enter 1 0 0 2 1 2 3 4.
After you enter the password, press OK. Next, press the MBOX softkey, and then press the CHNG softkey. Enter the mailbox number for which you want to reset the password. Traditional Phone Systems: More Harm Than Good
No Flexibility or Mobility
If you have a fixed line system, you may not have access to functions like auto attendant, department extensions, or call routing. Without these advanced functions, your customers may not be able to reach you in a timely fashion, which could hurt your customer service.
Installation
Because PBX systems require extensive hardware and expert knowledge, installation can be rather costly and may take weeks.
Single Purpose
Older phone systems were built to focus on making and receiving calls, and that’s it. We know now that all different means of communication are important and necessary for businesses. Being available via different routes of communication, such as email, text, or video conferencing, can greatly improve your business.
Lack Of Integration
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is growing in popularity among businesses and their employees. With their own device, they can seamlessly integrate with their business system through different apps for a more comfortable approach. Older phone systems don’t support this.
No Control Over Call Routing
You want your calls to be directed to the right people for the best in service. Without call management abilities, phone calls may be answered by unqualified employees, or may even be missed without a voicemail option. Don’t disappoint your customers. Upgrade to a cloud-based system.
With a Cloud-based system, you can gain access to numerous benefits. You are able to be more flexible with your system, allowing you to take calls whether in or out of the office so that your customers always have access to you. Installation is relatively quick as you simply need to know how many phones and users will be connected. And a cloud-based system can easily grow and expand with your business. Rather than focusing solely on phone calls, a Cloud-based system offers unified communications and integration.

What Is VoIP & Its Advantages For Business
Reduced Costs
Upgrading to a VoIP system can greatly reduce costs. Rather than dealing with separate internet and phone bills, fees are merged into one. Long distance charges are eliminated and you pay a low monthly fee for both internet and voice services.
Multiple Participants
Conference calls are much easier with VoIP technology rather than traditional phones. You can even utilize video conferencing. With VoIP, data packets are compressed allowing one line to handle several calls at a time.
Useful Features
While the standard calling features are available, VoIP systems enable you access to many more convenient features and functions. For example, call management is simplified and a variety of things like contact lists and extra-virtual numbers can be added as necessary. You can essentially build a custom system tailored to your preferences.
Cheap Hardware & Software
All you really need is reliable internet connection, a computer, speakers, sound card and a microphone. You may purchase additional equipment if you like, but it is not necessary. Software is available on the internet and is also relatively inexpensive, if not free.
Unified Communication
VoIP spans across all communication routes. You can easily integrate voice, video, text, and email if you wish. Having simple and easy access to communications helps your employees remain connected while helping your business thrive.

Security Tips for SIP Trunking
Some worry of the potential increased risk as communications and data are transmitted over networks. Previously, SIP trunking has been linked to instances of telephone fraud and unauthorized listening of calls. But with the proper security and safety measures in order, SIP trunking can be a powerful tool for you business.
While there are always potential risks out there, there are basic security measures we can take to minimize the risk factors. Keep these tips in mind to ensure that your networks and information are secure:
- Keep software and firmware up-to-date
Hackers love to find the weak points in systems and exploit them. They will work diligently until they crack they system. Software updates not only offer system enhancements, but they offer patches for any security vulnerabilities that arise. That is precisely why it is important to keep your system and devices up-to-date.
- Complex passwords
Because there are only so many alphanumeric characters, passwords can be relatively easy to crack. As technology advances and cybercriminals get smarter, attacking systems with high-level encryption becomes easier. Crawlers can automatically attempt standard and default passwords in every password field until it gets it right in a matter of minutes. By enforcing policies that require complex passwords on all accounts, you can help to keep your system safe. Requiring that passwords are changed regularly can increase your security.
- IP address authentication
Once your IP network is secure, the next step is to only allow internal IP addresses access to your telephony resources. That way, you can monitor who within your business gains access. If you have mobile users that also need access to the system, utilize custom or third-party tools that enable you to monitor log files and automatically block IP addresses that have failed a pre-set number of password attempts. Keeping a blacklist of IP addresses that pose potential threats can assist in keeping cyber criminals away.
- Trusted SIP providers
On the other hand, you can create an IP whitelist that includes only trusted SIP connections and allow your firewall to only accept trusted SIP providers. Intruders and unauthorized connections will not be allowed to gain access.
- Understand signaling and media
A secure transmission path is the best way to ensure that your communications are safe. You will want to do your homework and research different providers. Take a look at how they handle their transmissions. Some providers send signaling and media in two disassociated streams so that in case calls get intercepted, hackers do not access audio. Other providers may offer end-to-end encryption. Consider what is best for your company and find the provider that meets your standards.
- Secure connections
Virtual private networks work well if you have established home and satellite offices. Alternatively, you can disguise the transmission and access point by using a non-standard SIP port. If you have mobile workers that need to gain access, you may want to make sure that secure connection protocols (ex. secure socket layers) are in place.
Enforce these practices and enjoy a secure network system. Do you have any tips for your peers? Share with us on Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and Pinterest!
